The purpose of a meeting in Lisbon this week jointly arranged by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Academy of Marxism and the Portuguese Communist Party Central Committee was to enhance Sino-Portuguese exchanges, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency says 100 Chinese and Portuguese academics or experts in their fields discussed development in China and Europe in the modern age.

The report quotes Academy of Marxism Dean Deng Chundong as saying he hopes the meeting will improve understanding of the political and economic situation in China, in Portugal and in the world at large.

It quotes an unidentified Chinese diplomat as saying exchanges between the communist parties and academics in China and Portugal will gradually increase, so improving the Sino-Portuguese relationship and increasing Sino-Portuguese co-operation.
