Oi to test Huawei-equipped 5G network at Rock in Rio

Oi SA of Brazil will try out its fifth-generation wireless telecommunication network, which uses equipment supplied by Huawei Technology Co. Ltd of China, during the Rock in Rio music festival in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, Reuters reports.

The news agency, citing a written statement issued by Oi, says 5G phones will be handed out to the general public so they can follow live coverage of the festival.

The statement quotes an Oi executive, José Cláudio Moreira Gonçalves, as saying: “We’ve suggested to Rock in Rio the deployment of 5G to transform the event.”

Oi and Huawei began testing the 5G network in March, in the city of Búzios, Reuters says.
