Mato Grosso now accounts for 32.7% of Brazilian companies authorized to export sesame to China, according to a recent update from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). The number of units in Mato Grosso jumped from 8 to 20 — an increase of 150%.

With this advance, Brazil doubled the total number of accredited establishments, from 31 to 61, and Mato Grosso now accounts for approximately one-third of the national capacity to supply the Chinese market, the world's largest consumer of oilseeds. China absorbs 38.4% of global demand for sesame.

In addition to its leadership in exports, Mato Grosso has also established itself as Brazil's largest sesame producer. In the 2024/25 agricultural season, the state cultivated around 400,000 hectares and is expected to harvest 275,000 tons. To strengthen the sector, the Government of Mato Grosso established the Sesame Technical Chamber through the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedec). The chamber brings together producers, exporters, and public institutions to standardize production quality and expand the international market.
