Recently, the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) inaugurated the Interdisciplinary Center for Brazil-China Studies (CIEBC). In a statement, the university said that the initiative consolidates more than a decade of academic and scientific cooperation between the University and Chinese institutions.
Integrated into Unicamp's Coordination of Interdisciplinary Research Centers and Nuclei (Cocen), the new center was created with the purpose of strengthening the production of knowledge about Brazil-China relations in areas covering economics, social sciences, culture, science, and technology.
“In any scenario that one might try to outline for the economy and the distribution of power in the international sphere, understanding China is fundamental. Our main interest is to think critically about how the current moment opens up new challenges and opportunities for Brazil,” said Célio Hiratuka, professor at the Institute of Economics (IE).
With this consolidated structure, Unicamp seeks to establish itself as a reference in Chinese studies in Latin America, on par with leading international universities such as Harvard, Columbia, Oxford, Cambridge, the University of Tokyo, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam).
