Eight medical students from the Timorese Catholic University are in Macao taking part in an intensive practical training programme at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), aiming to strengthen clinical skills and address limitations in medical education in Timor-Leste.

The programme includes training in procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, using advanced medical simulation technologies and artificial intelligence tools.

According to the Vice-Rector of the Timorese Catholic University, João Câncio Freitas, the practical component is especially important in preparing future Timorese healthcare professionals, in a context where the health sector and medical training infrastructure in Timor-Leste still face significant challenges.

Co-operation between the Timorese Catholic University and MUST has been ongoing for three years and also includes study visits to medical institutions in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The programme is supported by the GX Foundation of Hong Kong, a non-governmental organisation founded by former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying.

The Macau University of Science and Technology believes that the use of advanced simulation technologies allows students to gain practical experience in complex clinical procedures, contributing to the development of medical training in Timor-Leste.
