On October 24, the “Opening Ceremony Portuguese-Speaking Countries Fine Art Exhibition and Book Launch of New Literary Works” of the 17th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries was held with great success at the Gallery of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) of the Macao SAR. The event was organized by the Permanent Secretariat of Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) and attended by distinguished guests, including representatives of the Macao SAR Government, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Consul-Generals of Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) in Macao, members of the Forum Macao Secretariat, and leading figures from the publishing industry and academia.

In his opening remarks, Secretary-General Ji Xianzheng stated that the Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries fully aligns with the Strategic Plan for Economic and Trade Co-operation (2024–2027). It seeks to promote cultural exchange among mainland China, Macao, and the PSCs, leverage Macao’s unique role as a cultural bridge, and further deepen friendly relations between China and the PSCs world. Following a highly successful tour stop in Zhongshan this past September that drew more than 70,000 visitors, the exhibition has now arrived in Macao on a strong foundation of public interest.

The exhibition presents outstanding works by 23 artists from nine PSCs, featuring a total of 27 paintings and photographs. These pieces vividly capture each nation’s distinctive regional cultures and authentic customs, delivering a fresh visual experience and deep emotional resonance for visitors. At the same venue, the Chinese translation of Angolan writer João Melo’s work, Is This Book a Novel? was officially launched, accompanied by a book donation ceremony. With humor and profound insight, Melo explores the struggles and reflections of the creative process while authentically portraying the realities and emotions of Angola and the wider African continent. Through literature, the work aims to build a spiritual bridge between Chinese and PSCs cultures and encourage dialogue among diverse civilizations.

The exhibition also includes the “2025 Collective Exhibition of Audiovisual Works from China–Portuguese”, featuring offline screenings of three acclaimed Chinese films. The event is open to the public from October 25 to November 18, 2025, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with free admission (closed on Mondays). The public is warmly invited to visit and experience this rich celebration of culture.
