The Government of Cabo Verde and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing co-operation in strategic areas for the country’s development. The agreement covers energy, water resources, agriculture and the integrated development of São Vicente and the northern islands.

The memorandum establishes a medium- and long-term co-operation framework, providing for the mobilisation of technology, engineering, investment and financing. The initiative seeks to align the Chinese company’s experience with the development priorities defined by the Cabo Verdean authorities.

The co-operation is expected to contribute to the energy transition, strengthen water security, improve conditions for agricultural production and promote greater economic integration among the northern islands. The parties also intend to promote infrastructure modernisation and support Cabo Verde’s sustainable development.

The document was signed by José Carlos Varela, Minister for Special Projects Co-ordination and Funding, and Wang Bo, Chairman of CMEC. During the ceremony, the importance of the Chinese company’s experience in delivering future projects was highlighted.

Chinese Ambassador to Cabo Verde Zhang Yang said that the Chinese Embassy would continue to facilitate co-ordination between Chinese companies and the Cabo Verdean authorities, contributing to the implementation of the projects and to stronger practical co-operation between the two countries.
