The third edition of the Brazil-China Joint Mathematical Meeting recently began in Luís Correia, in the Brazilian state of Piauí. The meeting brings together around 40 Chinese and 100 Brazilian researchers with the aim of strengthening scientific co-operation between the two countries.

At the opening session, Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles said that the meeting represented a milestone for local science. According to the governor, the presence of international researchers could contribute to the development of postgraduate programmes and research projects at the state’s higher education institutions.

Rafael Fonteles also noted that direct contact with foreign specialists enables local researchers to keep abreast of work being carried out at other research centres. The relationships established during the meeting could also facilitate new partnerships between researchers and institutions in the two countries.

Jiang Dehua, Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brazil, highlighted the fundamental role of mathematics in technological innovation. He said that the Embassy would continue to support exchange platforms and promote co-operation between Chinese and Brazilian scientists.

The initiative also aims to strengthen Piauí’s participation in international scientific networks and contribute to the development of new skills in science, technology and innovation.
