Brazil will receive its first two operational quantum computers in August this year, with capacities of 20 and 100 qubits. The equipment will be installed in the State of Paraíba, as part of a centre involving investment of 200 million reais and aimed at advancing towards the domestic manufacturing of these components.
The infrastructure results from a partnership with China’s Yangtze River Delta Industrial Innovation Center for Quantum Technology. The Chinese partner in the project is linked to the 54th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), a Chinese state-owned enterprise in the electronics and defence sectors. The partnership provides not only for the supply of the equipment, but also for technology transfer and the joint development of larger-scale computers in the future.
The project also includes the deployment of quantum communication networks between João Pessoa and Campina Grande, in the State of Paraíba, as well as a residency programme in quantum technologies, with investment of 20 million reais, 156 grants and training initiatives for 500 professionals in six cities across the country.
