Chinese manufacturer BYD has announced an investment of up to 500 million reais to develop the production of battery energy storage systems in Brazil. The project may involve expanding the existing factory in Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, or building a new industrial unit in the country, with the location still under evaluation. The decision will depend on technical studies and the regulatory framework.
The investment will be carried out in phases and is intended to strengthen electricity storage capacity amid the growth of power generation from renewable sources and the need for a better balance between generation and consumption.
The initiative forms part of BYD’s strategy to expand its presence in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) sector in the Brazilian market. The company believes the project could contribute to the development of this technology in the country and support the integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
In an initial phase, BYD expects to create between 300 and 400 direct jobs, as well as increase the incorporation of locally produced components, thereby strengthening Brazil’s industrial chain linked to the energy sector.
