China will assist in the construction of a bridge in north-eastern Brazil. Established last year, the partnership between the Chinese government and the current administration of Bahia will result in the Salvador–Itaparica bridge, which is expected to begin construction in 2026.

The agreement between the parties was signed in November 2025, during the visit of China's Consul General, Tian Min, to Salvador. At the time, the III Bahia-China Forum was taking place, organised by the Superintendence of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia (SEI) in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Chinese Consul-General.

The purpose of the event was to consolidate an international co-operation agenda focused on innovation, sustainability and reducing inequalities. During the meeting, Tian Min highlighted the Chinese government's interest in maintaining close ties with the Brazilian state.

‘This project is very important, and I hope we can make the dream of the Bahians come true. The partnership between Bahia and China is likely to grow even stronger with the work of the special secretariat, which will work closely with the construction consortium,’ said the consul.
