The new tunnel boring machine for Line 2-Green of the São Paulo Metro, manufactured by CREG (China Railway Engineering Equipment Group) and recently delivered in China, is 133 meters long, or 35 meters longer than Cora Coralina, which was previously the largest tunnel boring machine ever ordered in Brazil.

According to the state government, this is possibly due to the addition of an extra backup module. The tunnel boring machines in Rio and São Paulo have in common the fact that they are “Dual Mode” machines. In other words, they excavate in soil using the EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) method and in rock (open mode).

As we have shown, the new Brazilian tunnel boring machine is expected to arrive at Penha station, its starting point, in the first quarter of 2026. The Metro expects to have it up and running by June.
