The project by the Center for Studies in Environmental Economics and Natural Resources at the State University of São Paulo aims to identify and mitigate environmental risks and pollution in marine environments and will bring together experts from Brazilian, Portuguese, and Macau institutions—the University of Science and Technology and the University of São José (USJ).

USJ researcher André Antunes explained to Radio Macau what this research project, involving 15 universities in Brazil, Portugal, and Macau, consists of. It will study emerging pollutants in marine environments that “are not associated with high toxicity” but may present other types of long-term problems for human health.

André Antunes also said that Macau universities will contribute scientific expertise due to their specialization in “microbial diversity exploration.” For him, this project highlights how important it is for Macau to promote the presence of Portuguese-speaking scientists in the territory with links to international research networks.
