The vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), He Hongping, received a delegation from Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Beijing last week. The delegation was led by its president, Olival Freire Junior.

He Hongping welcomed the delegation on its first visit to CAS. He recalled that the two countries’ heads of state had elevated bilateral relations to a ‘China–Brazil Community with a Shared Future for Greater Equity and a More Sustainable Planet’, setting the direction for bilateral relations and giving fresh impetus to scientific and technological co-operation.

Reflecting on the long-standing co-operation with Brazil’s scientific community, he proposed exploring the establishment of a joint mechanism to support research in mathematics, the energy transition and the history of the natural sciences, as well as academic exchanges among young scientists, with a view to achieving further practical results.

Freire thanked the Academy for its hospitality and said that closer scientific co-operation between China and Brazil was in line with Brazil’s national development strategy and government priorities. He emphasised the importance of the partnership with CAS and expressed his willingness to promote exchanges of researchers and support joint research in areas where the two sides’ strengths complemented each other, encouraging mutual learning among scientists and further developing bilateral co-operation.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Embassy of Brazil in China and officials from the CAS Department of International Cooperation, the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics.
