Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, met senior officials from POWERCHINA and China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) in Beijing on 2 November, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral co-operation in the energy and water sectors.

The meetings focused on progress with major projects, the challenges associated with their implementation and new opportunities for co-operation and investment. They also aimed to mobilise technical and financial solutions to accelerate development in these sectors in Angola.

The meeting with POWERCHINA reviewed progress on projects to combat the effects of drought in southern Angola and on the Quilonga Grande Water Supply Project in Luanda Province. The completion and inauguration of the latter are priorities for the Angolan Government.

At the working session with CGGC, the minister reviewed progress on the Caculo Cabaça Hydropower Project in Cuanza Norte, one of Angola’s largest energy infrastructure projects.

According to the Embassy of Angola in China, the companies reaffirmed their commitment to the projects under way and their willingness to deepen co-operation. The Angolan Government continues to prioritise expanding electricity generation capacity, strengthening water security and modernising infrastructure.
