The 22nd Chinese medical team in Cabo Verde recently took part in a health fair in the municipality of Tarrafal, on the island of Santiago, providing specialised consultations to more than 100 patients. The initiative was organised by the Chinese and Overseas Charity Foundation, in partnership with the Tarrafal Health Centre.

During the activity, held at the Health Centre, consultations were provided in gynaecology and obstetrics, general surgery, anaesthesiology, intensive care, neurosurgery and acupuncture. The initiative sought to facilitate access to healthcare, particularly for people with fewer resources and difficulties travelling.

The Foundation’s President, Zheng Xinwang, said that the institution seeks to support people who face difficulties in accessing specialised consultations. He identified hypertension, diabetes and circulatory problems among the main health concerns. Cabo Verde’s First Lady, Débora Katísa Carvalho, highlighted the importance of bringing these services closer to communities, framing the initiative within the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cabo Verde.

The Tarrafal Health Delegate, Meliza Mendes, said that the participation of the Chinese medical team will help expand access to specialised consultations and reduce waiting times. The health fair also included the provision of medicines and the distribution of food baskets to vulnerable families.
