The governments of Cabo Verde and China recently signed a co-operation protocol in Praia for the rehabilitation of three Cabo Verdean schools, with Chinese technical and financial assistance. The document was signed by Arnaldo Brito, Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education, Science and Innovation, and Zhang Yang, China’s Ambassador to Cabo Verde.

The project covers Salineiro Secondary School in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, Olegário Tavares Secondary School in São Miguel, on the island of Santiago, and Eduardo Gomes Miranda Educational Complex in Santa Catarina do Fogo. The three facilities were originally built as part of co-operation with China.

The works include the rehabilitation of existing buildings, the construction of offices, laboratories and dining areas, as well as the provision of educational equipment and office furniture.

Zhang Yang said that the project would help improve teaching conditions and provide teachers and students with a safer and more modern environment. The Ambassador also expressed China’s willingness to deepen educational co-operation with Cabo Verde, including by hosting Cabo Verdean students and providing human-resource training.

Arnaldo Brito said that the protocol would support the Government’s efforts to modernise the education system, including school infrastructure and teacher training. The Minister also highlighted Cabo Verde’s interest in learning from China’s experience and strengthening links between schools and the labour market.
