São Paulo City Council recently hosted the 10th celebration of Chinese Immigrant Day. The event brought together more than 100 participants, including Chinese and Brazilian government representatives, leaders of the Chinese community and members of different sectors of society.
The event was organised by São Paulo councillor Edir Sales, the Brazil–Beijing Cultural Exchange Association and the Sino-Brazilian Business Association. It sought to recall different periods of Chinese immigration to Brazil and highlight the community’s contribution to São Paulo’s development.
Xie Yancun, Deputy Consul-General of China in São Paulo, noted that Chinese citizens living in Brazil have contributed to the country’s economic and social development and helped bring Chinese and Brazilian societies closer together. Edir Sales also referred to initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between São Paulo and China, including efforts to establish a sister-city relationship between São Paulo and Tianjin.
During the event, the exhibition “Remembering History, Building the Future Together — Historical Relics and Photographic Exhibition on Chinese Immigrants” was opened. It brought together photographs, historical objects and documents preserved by Chinese families in Brazil. The material depicts different stages of Chinese immigration, the formation of families, and the community’s social, professional and business integration.
The ceremony also included the presentation of honorary certificates to more than 70 representatives of the Chinese community, in recognition of their community work, promotion of exchanges between China and Brazil, and participation in initiatives related to São Paulo’s development.
