The closing ceremony and certificate presentation for the Colloquium on E-Commerce between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries was held on 30 October at the Press Centre of the Complex of Commerce and Trade Co-operation Platform for China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. The colloquium was organised by the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) and delivered by the City University of Macau.

Held from 18 to 31 October, the colloquium brought together 20 participants, including government officials and representatives of business associations from six Portuguese-speaking countries: Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Timor-Leste. Those attending and delivering speeches at the ceremony included Ji Xianzheng, Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao; Liu Jun, Rector of the City University of Macau; and Juvânia Costa, the trainees’ rotating representative.

In his speech, Secretary-General Ji Xianzheng said that the Secretariat had been actively implementing the consensus set out in the Action Plan for Economic and Trade Co-operation adopted at the 6th Ministerial Conference. It was promoting mutually beneficial co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in e-commerce and logistics, and deepening bilateral trade through the “Virtual Pavilion for Products from Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries”. The colloquium also arranged for participants to attend the 31st Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) and take part in a study visit to Yiwu, a city known as the “e-commerce capital” of mainland China, enabling in-depth exchanges in the sector. In November, the Secretariat will hold two further thematic colloquia, on think-tank exchanges and artificial intelligence, and continue to draw on Macao’s role as a platform to give fresh impetus to comprehensive co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Rector Liu Jun said the colloquium combined classroom learning, interaction at trade fairs and exhibitions, and study visits to Yiwu. Its wide-ranging content covered platform operations, cross-border regulation and green supply chains, providing a comprehensive overview of China’s experience in e-commerce. The programme was closely aligned with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, translating national digital-economy strategies into practical skills that participants could use to promote and contribute to the development of markets in Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Speaking on behalf of all the trainees, their rotating representative, Juvânia Costa, expressed sincere thanks to the Chinese Government and the Macao SAR Government for their support for the development of Portuguese-speaking Countries. The trainees were unanimous in considering cross-border e-commerce a key driver of the digitalisation of modern trade. They hoped that stronger regulatory co-ordination, logistics supply chains and cross-border payments would help build a China–Portuguese-speaking Countries Digital Silk Road, further strengthening Macao’s role as an intercontinental bridge and a service platform for trade co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

During the colloquium, participants studied China’s e-commerce development, sustainable trade and green supply chains, combining theoretical research with first-hand observation of industry. On the mainland, they visited several organisations in Yiwu, including Yiwu International Trade City and the Global Digital Trade Center, and held exchange meetings with the Yiwu Cross-Border E-Commerce Association and Yiwu Industrial & Commercial College, among other institutions. In Hengqin, they visited the Greater Bay Area Cross-Border E-Commerce Industrial Park (Hengqin Bringbuys).

While in Macao, the trainees took part in several MIF activities, including a visit to the Exhibition of the Results of Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, the Economic and Trade Exchange Session between Fujian, Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries, and the 4th Industrial and Commercial Conference for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. They also visited Macao’s Economic and Technological Development Bureau and the Alliance for China–Portuguese-speaking Countries Co-operation Studies, a local think tank, deepening their understanding of economic and trade co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Other guests of honour at the closing ceremony included Eduardo Velasco Galiano, Consul-General of Angola in Macao; Rodrigues Victorino Muêbe, Consul-General of Mozambique in Macao; representatives of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; representatives of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR; and members of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao.
