Portuguese researcher Elvira Fortunato has told Portuguese news agency Lusa that the NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL) will establish a Sino-Portuguese joint laboratory in Macao on 9 April, focusing on research into sustainable energy, next-generation display technologies and smart devices.

The laboratory will bring together the resources of UNL's Institute for Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (i3N) and the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at the Macao University of Science and Technology, fostering co-operation between the two institutions in optoelectronics, nanotechnology and advanced materials. According to Fortunato, the new laboratory aims to create a collaborative platform enabling researchers from Portugal, China and other countries to work together on shared priorities such as sustainable energy, next-generation display technologies and smart devices.

Optoelectronics, which focuses on electronic components that emit, detect and control light, is a critical field driving future technological developments, including emerging areas such as optical computing, where computation is performed using light.
