The construction of the pier on Inhaca Island in Maputo, considered the largest of its kind in the world, is 99% complete, with its opening to the public scheduled for Friday.

Launched in November 2024 with an estimated investment of around US$13.5 million, the structure is a pier almost one kilometre long, with road and pedestrian accesses of approximately 353 metres and four access stairs. The project is being carried out by the Chinese state-owned company China Road and Bridge Corporation.

‘The project is 99% complete. This week we are just making the final adjustments,’ Narciso Chipole, Director of Engineering at Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), the concessionaire of the port of Maputo and main financier of the project, told the press on 1 March.

Located at the entrance to Maputo Bay, Inhaca is one of the main tourist destinations in Maputo province. However, the connection between the island and the city is inadequate due to limited availability of maritime transport and mooring conditions.

At the launch of the project on 1 November 2024, the then President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said in Inhaca that the construction of the pier, valued at US$13.5 million, would boost tourism, trade and research.
