The Brazilian government has decided to revoke the previously announced increase and restore the original tariffs for a range of technological products, including mobile phones.
According to the resolution of the Foreign Trade Chamber (CAMEX), tariffs have been cancelled for 105 products, mostly capital goods and computer and telecommunications equipment, while 15 other products in the sector will retain tariffs, but at levels prior to the announced measure.
With the reversal, products such as laptops and smartphones will once again be subject to a 16% tariff, while power supply cabinets, motherboards, mice, digitising tablets and solid-state drives (SSDs) will return to a 10.8% tariff.
The planned increase included rises of up to 7.2 percentage points in some cases. CAMEX had decided to increase tariffs, arguing that these computer products were entering the country in excess, with an increase of 33.4% over the previous year.
