The Macau Polytechnic University (UPM) and the University of Coimbra (UC) announced last week the creation of a joint research programme in Digital Humanities, focused on promoting Sino-Portuguese studies and digitising historical archives, in an initiative that aims to deepen interdisciplinary scientific cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

The MUP emphasises that the project aims to ‘further develop Macao's role as a bridge for academic exchange’ and consolidate international collaboration in emerging areas of research. The programme brings together the expertise of the two institutions to drive ‘multidimensional research innovations’, covering the digitisation of historical document collections, the development of large-scale Portuguese language models using artificial intelligence, the digital revitalisation of cultural heritage and new forms of contemporary digital communication.

In the same context, an agreement was signed to establish a basis for cooperation in higher education in the so-called Macau and Hengqin International Education City, with the aim of building an ‘international campus’ oriented towards the global community, recalled UPM Rector Marcus Im.
