The Chinese Ambassador to Cape Verde, Zhang Yang, gave a speech on 6 February during the 2026 Chinese New Year ceremony hosted by the Chinese Embassy, reaffirming his country's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Cape Verde.

During his speech, Zhang Yang highlighted his country's economic and diplomatic progress, explaining that China maintains stable economic growth and is committed to strengthening bilateral co-operation in 2026. The diplomat recalled that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cape Verde and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the African continent.

The diplomat also highlighted the contribution of the Chinese community residing in Cape Verde, as well as Chinese institutions in the country, particularly in the areas of health, education, agriculture, culture and technical co-operation, emphasising the role of the Confucius Institute, the Chinese medical team and South-South co-operation projects.
