Brazil has received 3,170 kilometres of fibre optic cables from China, which will be used to install three new information highways capable of connecting remote municipalities in the northern region.
The operation marks the largest fibre optic transfer logistics operation ever carried out under the Norte Conectado programme, expanding access to quality internet and boosting digital inclusion in the Amazon.
The transfer of Chinese cables to national vessels will take 30 days. The launch of the structure in the Amazon riverbeds is scheduled to begin in May.
The initiative has the potential to benefit around 7.5 million people in 70 municipalities in the states of Amazonas, Amapá, Acre, Rondônia, Roraima and Pará. With an estimated investment of R$ 1.3 billion, the project uses the subfluvial model for the installation of fibre optic cables, avoiding deforestation and contributing to the preservation of more than 50 million trees.
