Brazil will exempt Chinese citizens from the need for short-term visas in some categories, the Brazilian president announced on 23 January after a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that he will grant exemptions for certain categories of short-stay visas to Chinese citizens, in reciprocity to the exemption measure adopted by China since 2025.

During the telephone conversation, which lasted about 45 minutes, Lula da Silva and Xi Jinping ‘agreed to expand co-operation in areas at the frontier of knowledge’ and to take advantage of the synergies between their countries for the development of infrastructure, ecological transition and technology projects. The two leaders also analysed the current uncertain international scenario and reiterated their commitment to ‘defending multilateralism, international law and free trade’.

In this context, they supported ‘strengthening the United Nations as the path to defending peace and stability in the world’.
