A Brazilian professor based in China has assessed that the Chinese development model has established itself as a relevant benchmark for countries in the Global South, especially because it combines long-term strategic planning with an agenda of economic openness.
The analysis was presented by Marcus De Freitas, visiting professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, in statements published on 12 January 2026. With eight years of professional experience in the country, he stated that the predictability generated by the Chinese planning culture tends to benefit investors, institutions and society by reducing uncertainty and providing a horizon for public policies.
As a concrete example, Freitas highlighted the start of ‘special customs operations’ across the island of Hainan, within the Hainan Free Trade Port, which Chinese authorities claim is the largest in the world in terms of land area. The measure, which began in December 2025, was described as a sign of Beijing's commitment to high-standard openness and the promotion of a more inclusive global economy.
