Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, and the city of São Paulo officially established a sister city relationship after signing an agreement on 11 November 2025, during a visit by a delegation from the Wuhan municipal government to Brazil. The formalisation, announced on 11 January 2026, was presented as a step towards expanding bilateral co-operation in areas such as trade, science and technology, and education.

On the Brazilian side, the São Paulo City Council said the agreement paves the way for exchanges and joint projects in economics and trade, research and innovation, culture, sports, health, education and staff training. The municipal administration described Wuhan as one of China's hubs of innovation and technology and pointed out that the partnership could bring together productive sectors and research institutions, with the potential to generate opportunities for mutual development.

According to Xinhua, São Paulo has become Wuhan's 30th international sister city, which claims to maintain friendly relations with 127 cities and regions in 65 countries.
