The China-Brazil Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Tropical Microorganisms, based at the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), recently opened in Beijing.

The initiative is a bilateral partnership between the countries led by Fiocruz and CAS, which began in 2023 during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's visit to Chinese leader Xi Jinping. On that occasion, the partners signed a memorandum of understanding for the creation of the Sino-Brazilian Center for Infectious Disease Prevention and Research (IDRPC), based in both countries, with the laboratory serving as the Chinese headquarters.

“The milestone celebrated today represents a step forward in Brazil-China bilateral relations and in health cooperation in the Global South,” said Fiocruz President Mario Moreira during his remote participation in a video at the inauguration.
