The Jorge Álvares Foundation has established the “Jorge Álvares Foundation – General Vasco Rocha Vieira – Portugal-China Friendship” award, with applications for the first edition open from January 1 to June 30, 2026.
The annual award, worth €25,000, aims to honor and contribute to perpetuating the memory of the last Governor of Macau, founder of the Jorge Álvares Foundation, its Curator and first president, who passed away about a year ago. The award aims to encourage the study and research of relations between Portugal and the People’s Republic of China through Macao, as well as to recognize institutions that promote relevant initiatives that strengthen the rapprochement between the Portuguese, Chinese, and Macanese communities.
In accordance with the respective regulations, and in order to provide potential candidates with adequate preparation time, the Foundation has already announced the theme for the first edition of the award in the Research Works category, to be awarded in 2027: “From the signing of the Joint Declaration to the transfer of the Portuguese Administration of Macao.”
