The President of Timor-Leste awarded the Medal of Merit to 12 Chinese doctors in recognition of their contribution to the country's health sector. “The awarding of the Medal of Merit to these 12 dedicated doctors symbolizes the deep gratitude of the people of Timor-Leste,” the head of state said in a statement.
According to José Ramos-Horta, the service of these professionals “embodies the spirit of international cooperation and contributes to saving countless lives,” strengthening the medical capabilities of the Timorese, as well as reinforcing the bonds of friendship and solidarity between Timor-Leste and China.
The first Chinese medical brigade arrived in Timor-Leste in 2003 under a cooperation agreement signed between the two countries. Since then, dozens of Chinese medical brigades have passed through the country. The brigade that is now ending its mission was in the country for two years and served at the Guido Valadares National Hospital and several health centers. The new team of Chinese doctors has already arrived in Timor-Leste from Sichuan province, the Timorese Presidency added.
