The 14th Meeting of Portuguese-language Writers was held from 8 to 10 October in the city of Praia, Cape Verde, with the aim of boosting the participation of Macao, Brazil and Timor-Leste, according to the organisers. The event was organised by the Union of Portuguese-language Capital Cities (UCCLA) and the Praia City Council.
The UCCLA's Deputy Secretary-General, Paula Leal da Silva, explained that the initiative was intended to widen the participation of countries and regions that are geographically more distant. Hugo Pinto attended the meeting on behalf of Macao, which currently holds the presidency of the UCCLA Executive Committee.
Held under the theme "The Portuguese Language as an Element of Adaptation in a Changing World", the meeting brought together writers, researchers, publishers, teachers, literary critics and readers from various countries and regions. The programme featured debates on Portuguese as a second language outside the Lusophone world, its role in science, technology and innovation, Brazilian poetry, and the contribution of the UCCLA–Lisbon City Council Literary Revelation Prize to young writers.
The Timor-Leste Minister of State Administration also attended the meeting. The organisers sought to bring literature closer to the general public through a book fair, a food fair and symbolic activities, such as a tree-planting ceremony.
