The Algarve Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and the University of Algarve (UAlg) hosted the 6th annual meeting of the International Joint Research Centre for Marine Sciences in Faro on 23 and 24 September. The meeting brought together Portuguese and Chinese researchers to deepen co-operation in marine sciences.

The opening session was attended by Portugal’s Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, and China’s Ambassador to Portugal, Yang Yirui, as well as representatives of the participating institutions.

CCMAR President Adelino Canário said the collaboration had enabled the two sides to develop projects and train students jointly, while also bringing the cultures of the two countries closer together.

Researchers from CCMAR, UAlg and Shanghai Ocean University presented work on the conservation and management of marine ecosystems, molecular biology and evolution, climate change, aquaculture and nutrition.

The programme also covered marine biotechnology and health, as well as the application of artificial intelligence, bioimaging and data science to research. The sessions provided opportunities to share knowledge and discuss different scientific approaches.
