According to Portugal's National Statistics Institute (INE), in data released on September 9, exports of goods grew by 6.5% year-on-year in July, the fourth consecutive month of growth, totaling €$ 7,403 million; imports rose by 0.6% to €10,455 million. The trade deficit narrowed to €3,052 million, down €393 million compared to the same period of the previous year. Export growth was driven primarily by an 11% increase in sales to Spain (mainly fuels and industrial supplies). The slowdown in imports was primarily due to a significant 81.2% drop in purchases from Ireland (essentially chemical products), even though imports from France (+25.6%, transport equipment) and Spain (+4.3%, fuels) increased.
