The Mozambican government and Chinese technology giant Huawei are exploring the possibility of building a factory to produce mobile phones tailored to the needs of rural areas in the country, it was recently announced. The mutual interest was expressed during a visit by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Mozambican Community Abroad, Maria Manso, to Huawei in the Chinese capital, Beijing, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mozambique.

According to the ministry, the construction of the plant is part of the objective to "mobilize foreign investment for the country" and could contribute to the improvement of the country's telecommunications infrastructure.

On June 18, the Chinese multinational highlighted Mozambique as one of the “reference cases” in the digitalization of the electric power sector in Africa, during the Huawei Electric Power Summit 2025, an event organized by Huawei focusing on the digital transformation of the electric sector.
