The 17th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, organized by the Permanent Secretariat of Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), will take place from September 26 to November 18, 2025. This year’s event will feature cultural exchange activities in Macao, inviting artists, craftsmen, and chefs from China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSC). For the first time, the dance troupe is planning its inaugural performances in Beijing and Zhongshan. The press conference was held on September 17 at the China-PSC Complex News Center, attended by Secretary-General Ji Xianzheng, Deputy Secretaries-General Xie Ying and Danilo Afonso Henriques, and Acting Coordinator of the Support Office Sam Lei, who introduced details of the event.

Secretary-General Ji Xianzheng stated that the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum highly praised the Cultural Week’s contribution in promoting cultural exchanges. Since the Cultural Week was launched, the Permanent Secretariat has leveraged the Forum’s mechanisms to maximize Macao’s role as a platform for cultural exchange and co-operation between China–Portuguese-speaking countries. This year’s event will continue the China–Portuguese Audiovisual Exhibition and, for the first time, extend the “A Tapestry of Luso-Chinese Splendour” performance to Beijing and Zhongshan in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), fostering deeper cultural connections across the three cities.

The 17th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries will kick off on September 26 at the Legend Boulevard, Fisherman’s Wharf, Macao, with a grand opening ceremony. It will bring together cultural and artistic teams from China (Qinghai Province) and nine Portuguese-speaking countries—Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste—who have traveled from afar to present an array of exciting shows for the public. The event will feature a vibrant line-up of shows, including song and dance performances by Chinese and PSC’s art troupes, handicraft markets, culinary showcases, and stalls showcasing products from PSC and Macao. Additionally, renowned chefs from PSC will join forces with local Macao restaurateurs at Fisherman’s Wharf to create unique menus, presenting guests with exquisite dishes that blend the flavors of the Lusophone world.

To further the outcomes of the 6th Ministerial Conference and enhance Macao’s role as “One Center, One Platform, One Base”, the Permanent Secretariat will strengthen co-operation in the audiovisual sector between China and PSC to promote cultural exchange. Building on last year’s successful collaboration with mainland Chinese authorities, the “2025 Collective Exhibition of Audiovisual Works from China–Portuguese” will be held on September 26 at the Macao University of Science and Technology’s Movie Hall. The event will include offline screenings of Inspiring Greater Bay Area China: A French Sinologist’s Investigation of Southern China and a meet-and-greet with the creators. Subsequently, screenings will take place at the Macao IAM Gallery, with content gifted to PSC’s television stations and made available online on the Permanent Secretariat’s official website, enhancing mutual understanding through documentaries.

As a resplendent chapter of this year’s Cultural Week, the “Portuguese-Speaking Countries Fine Art Exhibition and Book Launch of New Literary Works” will be held on October 24 at the Macao IAM Gallery, showcasing distinctive works by artists from multiple PSC. The exhibition will run from October 25 to November 18. Furthermore, a book launch for the Angolan literary work Is This Book a Novel?, translated into Chinese, will take place during the Cultural Week and be released simultaneously in mainland China and Macao. Through diverse cultural and creative themes, the Cultural Week aims to strengthen cultural co-operation and people-to-people connections between China and PSC.

Leveraging Macao’s platform role to effectively tell China’s stories well, with a linkage between the capital and the GBA as a new highlight of this Cultural Week. For the first time, the event expands beyond Macao, with dual main venues in Beijing and Macao, and activities extending to Zhongshan in the GBA. The main venue for the Zhongshan stop is the Xingzhong Square, featuring performances by various countries’ troupes and an art exhibition from PSC at the Xiangshan Commercial Culture Museum. The main venue for the Beijing stop is the BIG Shopping Park, hosting performances and promotional activities by artistic teams. By extending the event to Beijing and Zhongshan, it aims to capitalize on Macao’s unique platform to showcase the success of “One Country, Two Systems”, promote comprehensive exchanges between China and PSC, spread Chinese culture, and foster mutual learning among civilizations.
