Chinese investments in Brazil's electricity sector grew by more than 100% in 2024, reinforcing a trend that did not start recently, said Cláudia Trevisan, executive director of the Brazil-China Business Council, in an interview with Times Brasil – CNBC Exclusive Licensee.
“The electricity sector has been attracting Chinese investments since at least 2010, and over that period it has come to account for 45% of all Chinese investments in Brazil, totaling tens of billions of dollars,” she said, noting that generation, transmission, and distribution remain the pillars of this interest.
The executive pointed out that this leading role is linked to Chinese technological dominance in the global energy transition. “China is now the world's largest manufacturer of solar panels, wind equipment, electric batteries, and storage systems. We are seeing the country increase its investments in solar, wind, and also in the electric car chain.”
