In recent years, the presence of Chinese culture in Maputo has become increasingly visible. The growing interest in Chinese culture is due to China’s role as a commercial and strategic partner of Mozambique, scholarship and exchange opportunities for students, and the expansion of Chinese companies in the country, which increases the demand for bilingual professionals.
As an important platform for cultural exchange between China and Mozambique, the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University and some private schools are promoting the teaching of Mandarin, martial arts, calligraphy, and other Chinese cultural expressions. A new generation of Mozambicans is growing up familiar with the language, customs, and values of China—building bridges for a more connected and cooperative future.
More and more private schools in Maputo are including Mandarin as a curricular or extracurricular subject. Many of these institutions have also signed agreements with Chinese universities and companies, preparing young people for a global market where China plays an increasingly important role, which is driving the transformation of Chinese language teaching in Mozambique.
