Mozambican President Daniel Chapo recently presided over a groundbreaking ceremony for the National Surgical Centre at Maputo Central Hospital. The project, financed by China with more than US$40 million, aims to strengthen the country’s surgical capacity and the provision of specialised medical care. Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Zheng Xuan also attended the ceremony.

Daniel Chapo said that the project demonstrated the results of Mozambique’s diplomatic efforts and gave concrete expression to agreements concluded between the Governments of Mozambique and China. He described the initiative as another milestone in the long-standing co-operation between the two countries, particularly in public health.

Zheng Xuan highlighted the friendship and mutual trust between the two countries. She said that China had supported Mozambique’s healthcare sector by training healthcare professionals, strengthening their capacity and supplying medical equipment.

According to the ambassador, the new centre, which will be built by Chinese companies, is expected to strengthen Mozambique’s capacity to respond to surgical needs and improve medical care, contributing to the development of the country’s healthcare sector.
