In Portugal, sales of Chinese electric vehicle brands soared more than 70% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly 2,600 units in the 100% electric light vehicle market. This increase came at a pace well above the market, which grew by 24% in the year to March compared to the same period last year. Chinese brands already account for 17% of sales in this segment. In 2025, Chinese brands held a 10% share of 100% electric car sales and approximately 5% of the total automotive market.

The trend extends across Europe, where Chinese vehicles accounted for 7% of sales in 2025, two percentage points higher than the previous year. In total, more than one million cars originating from China reached the European market, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA).

The best-selling Chinese brand of 100% electric vehicles in Portugal was BYD, with more than 1,260 units sold by March, representing annual growth of 24% and a market share of over 8%.
