The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, recently highlighted in Shanghai the convergence of positions between Portugal and China in the defence of multilateralism and the strengthening of the United Nations' role in the international order.
After a stop in Beijing, Aguiar-Branco travelled to Shanghai, where, in statements to Lusa news agency, he stressed the importance of not undervaluing the UN as a platform for consensus. The Portuguese official also thanked China for its support of Portugal's candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 biennium.
According to the President of Parliament, the multi-party presence on the official mission demonstrates broad recognition of the importance of Portugal-China relations, which he said should be "encouraged and developed for the benefit of both sides."
Aguiar-Branco also highlighted the strong growth in trade and Chinese investment in Portugal, which saw bilateral trade reach €9.4 billion in 2025 and accumulated direct investment of €14.4 billion since 2012.
