Launched in 2016, BYD's monorail system began operating in several cities across China before arriving in São Paulo. In Brazil, it has been integrated into São Paulo's Metro Line 17-Ouro, which was inaugurated just a few days ago.
The São Paulo government had initially planned for the monorail to enter service in time for the 2014 World Cup, which was hosted in the country. Following successive technical constraints and substantial investments, the line has finally been completed, incorporating technology from BYD, the Chinese giant of the electric vehicle sector.
SkyRail is an electric monorail system that runs on a single suspended track. On Line 17-Ouro, the trains operate automatically, without the need for a driver. As it runs on electricity, the system is considered more environmentally sustainable, since it does not rely on fossil fuels.
According to Alexandre Baldy, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing at BYD Brazil, this is currently the company's only project outside China and the first SkyRail system to operate in Brazil.
