Matheus Bender, a young man from Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, is preparing to embark on an international experience with a scholarship as a student in one of China's most competitive programs, with an acceptance rate of only 2.7%.

The sociologist will study for a master's degree in Law and Society at Peking University (PKU) in the Yenching Academy program for two years. The financial aid is approximately R$ 2,000 per month. According to the institution, 114 academics from 40 countries were selected.

In his research, he intends to study public policies for poverty reduction in China over the last 40 years. “I want to learn about China's development in order to think about possible parallels, both for Brazil and for the global South. I believe that growth only happens together. And I believe in something that the Chinese talk about a lot, which is this future of shared prosperity,” he said.
