China increases ferroniobium imports from Brazil

In 2024, China increased its imports of ferroniobium from Brazil, the main product made from niobium, by 13%. Brazilian industry is hegemonic in this sector. As the largest holder of global ferroniobium reserves, Brazil is responsible for 95% of the world's total reserves.


Overall, the Chinese imported 41.1 thousand tons of Brazilian ferroniobium in 2024. This is an increase of almost 5 thousand tons compared to the previous year.


Brazilian extraction occurs mainly in the state of Minas Gerais. The state's deposit is located in Araxa and is explored by the Brazilian Mining and Metallurgy Company.


In terms of export. Around 80% of all ferroniobium exported by Brazil is produced with niobium coming from Minas Gerais. In 2024, the Chinese purchased 45% of all ferroniobium exported by Brazil. Minas Gerais production supplied 70% of this market.
