A delegation from the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences met state deputies and representatives of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) on 28 October at the Legislative Assembly of the State of Santa Catarina (Alesc), in Brazil.
The meeting addressed cooperation in technological innovation, research, trade and cultural exchange. The delegation was received by the 1st vice-president of the Alesc, Fernando Krelling.
Researcher Zhou Zhiwei, director of the institute's International Relations Division, said the delegation intends to strengthen academic ties with the UFSC and other higher education institutions and promote joint research. He also expressed interest in learning more about the state, given the importance of trade relations and Chinese investment in the region.
Deputy Rodrigo Minotto, coordinator of the Santa Catarina–China Parliamentary Front, highlighted the possibility of creating a Confucius Institute unit in partnership with the UFSC. The unit would aim to teach Chinese, promote culture and foster academic exchange.
Minotto considered that co-operation between the Alesc, the UFSC and the State Court of Auditors could support joint projects and create development opportunities. Deputy Fabiano da Luz also backed the initiative, advocating stronger cultural ties and the teaching of Mandarin.
