The Mayor of the Brazilian municipality of Viçosa, Ângelo Chequer, recently took part in a reception hosted by the Consulate-General of China in Rio de Janeiro at the National Historical Museum. The event marked the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and brought together representatives from the public, academic and business sectors.
The delegation included the Municipal Secretary for Economic Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Ramon Fernandes; the Rector of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Demetrius David da Silva; and the businessman Bruno Santana.
During the reception, the Viçosa representatives met with Consul-General Tian Min and the Commercial Consul of the Consulate-General, Jing Yanhui. The participation came about following an approach between the municipality and the Brazil–China Chamber of Commerce, which opened the way for institutional contacts and the scouting of potential trade partners.
The municipal administration intends to broaden Viçosa's institutional and economic ties, present its potential, and identify cooperation and investment opportunities. Among the areas of interest are innovation, education and technology.
Chequer highlighted the importance of dialogue between the public authorities, the university and the business sector. In his view, these contacts could pave the way for future partnerships and contribute to job creation and income generation in the municipality.
