The China (Hunan)-Mozambique Economic and Trade Matchmaking Conference recently took place in Maputo, bringing together more than 180 representatives from over 110 companies and business associations, along with government officials and diplomatic representatives from both countries.

The participants examined opportunities for co-operation in the fields of culture and media, sports, energy, infrastructure and industrial parks. During the conference, 11 co-operation agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed, covering four main areas.

The Secretary-General of the Communist Party of China Hunan Provincial Committee, Wang Junshou, called for the establishment of regular exchange mechanisms, better strategic alignment and swift implementation of co-operation projects. He also highlighted the complementarity between Hunan’s capabilities in the fields of technology, equipment and capital and Mozambique’s natural resources, access to markets and workforce.

The Mozambican Secretary of State for Tourism, Fredson Bacar, highlighted the country’s interest in increasing the local processing of its natural resources while attracting investment in the industry and digital transformation. The official said that Mozambique’s geographical location and its transport corridors could reinforce the country’s role as a gateway to Southern African markets.

The Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique, Wu Jinjia, encouraged businesses to take advantage of the opportunities related to China’s zero-tariff policy for African countries and expand co-operation in emerging areas, such as smart agriculture and new energy sources.
