China’s Ambassador to Brazil attends opening of Latin America’s first Chinese Language and Culture undergraduate programme in São Paulo

The opening ceremony of the Chinese Language and Culture undergraduate programme at São Paulo State University (Unesp) was recently held at its Assis campus. China’s Ambassador to Brazil, Zhu Qingqiao, attended the ceremony and delivered the “first class of the semester” to the new students. Celso Amorim, Chief Adviser to the Special Advisory Office of the Presidency of the Republic, sent a congratulatory letter on the opening of the programme. Yu Yunfeng, Director of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) at the Ministry of Education, and Liu Jianping, President of Hubei University, delivered video speeches.

 

Also present were Yu Peng, China’s Consul-General in São Paulo; Telma Spera, Mayor of Assis; Maysa Furlan, President of São Paulo State University; other Chinese and foreign guests; faculty and student representatives; and the 40 students in the first cohort.

 

Ambassador Zhu congratulated São Paulo State University and Hubei University on the launch of the Chinese Language and Culture undergraduate programme. He noted that São Paulo State University had established Brazil’s first Confucius Institute 18 years ago. The opening of the programme marks the creation of Latin America’s first four-year Chinese-language undergraduate programme jointly developed by Chinese and Brazilian universities. The initiative represents an expansion of educational co-operation between the two countries, from Chinese-language teaching to higher education leading to academic degrees and the training of specialised professionals.

 

In the “first class of the semester”, Ambassador Zhu explained the origins and evolution of Chinese characters and presented the rich historical and cultural heritage reflected in the development of contemporary China and its foreign policy. He encouraged students to learn Chinese well, become ambassadors of friendship between China and Brazil and contribute, through their youth and wisdom, to building a China–Brazil community with a shared future.
