The arrival of the Brazilian film I’m Still Here, winner of the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, on Chinese screens brought more than a new perspective on Brazil’s recent past—it also opened a sensitive channel of dialogue between distant cultures, connecting memories and emotions through the universal language of cinema.
In fact, Chinese audiences’ interest in Brazilian cinema is not new. Classics like Central Station and Elite Squad have already shown that Brazilian productions, with their social depth and warmth, are gaining increasing popularity among Chinese film fans.
This cultural rapprochement has gone beyond movie theaters. On Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), Brazilian music and dance with vibrant beats are inspiring thousands of challenges and recreations. At the same time, clips from Chinese series and martial arts films are gaining followers in Brazil, fostering an increasingly dynamic exchange between the two cultures.
