Brazilian biotechnology startup Hilab won an innovation contest in Macau, in which six other Portuguese and Brazilian companies were also recognized, opening the door to support, financing, and the Chinese market, the organization announced.
Hilab, founded in 2016, has developed a portable diagnostic device that provides laboratory-quality results. The device requires “just a few drops of blood” and can “perform 25 types of tests, covering 85% of the most requested medical diagnoses.” The company currently operates in 1,700 Brazilian cities and has performed more than three million tests, exporting its products to countries in South America, as well as other regions such as Indonesia, Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa.
The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Macau) for Technology Companies in Brazil and Portugal 2025 was organized by the Economic and Technological Development Bureau of Macau and the Macao Young Entrepreneurs Incubation Center. The competition received 20 applications from the two countries and selected 17 finalists in areas such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, medical devices, and NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things).
